The 12 Houses — Life's Twelve Rooms

You've learned planets (what) and signs (in what color) so far. Now for the last piece: houses (on which stage). If a sign is the color of your personality, a house is the area, stage of life where that energy plays out. It divides the sky into twelve slices, and each slice handles one area of life.

The twelve stages connect like this. Starting with the 1st house being your own self, it continues: 2 money, 3 communication, 4 home, 5 love/creativity, 6 work/health, 7 partner, 8 deep bonding, 9 learning/travel, 10 career, 11 friends/dreams, 12 the unconscious. It's easy to remember as an order that starts from the 'self' close to you and gradually spreads out into the wider world.

Why do houses matter? Because the same planet or sign expresses itself in a different spot depending on which house it's in. For example, if passionate Mars is in the 2nd house (money), it lights a fire under making money; if it's in the 5th house (love), that passion pours into love and hobbies. Look at which room a planet rents, and you can see where your energy is actually pouring.

If there is a house with several planets clustered in it, that's a life theme that tends to repeat throughout your life. If planets cluster in the 10th house, career and social achievement are a big theme throughout your life; in the 4th house, it's home and roots. ('What's active right Now' is a separate question — you need to check that together with transits, which you'll learn later.) On the other hand, a house with no planets in it doesn't mean that area doesn't exist for you — it's simply a quieter, less crowded stage.

One thing worth remembering: houses are set by 'birth time and place', because your Ascendant is the reference point (where the 1st house starts). So without a birth time, houses only show up blurry. The more exact the time, the sharper the stage becomes. And there's more than one way to divide houses (Placidus, whole sign, equal, etc.) — Glowy uses the Placidus method. Which house a planet falls into can shift a little depending on the method.
