Planets say what's happening; signs say what color it happens in.
If the Big Three (Sun, Moon, Rising) are the big skeleton, now it's time to add the rest of the flesh. Your chart has ten planets, including the Sun and Moon. It's easiest to think of each planet as an actor handling one function of the mind. And which sign that actor wears as its costume decides the color of the performance. In other words, the planet says 'what,' and the sign says 'in what color'.
The ten planets split into three groups by distance. Among those aside from the Sun and Moon, the inner personal planets are Mercury, Venus, and Mars. They're close to you, so they color your personality directly. Mercury handles how you think and speak, Venus handles love and taste, and Mars handles drive and action.
A little further out are the social planets: Jupiter and Saturn. They handle how you get along with the world, beyond just yourself. Jupiter is the force of expansion — widening, growing, and building belief, though taken too far it becomes exaggeration and excess. Saturn is the force of compression and structure — instead of tightening and drawing limits, it builds consistency, mastery, and structures that last. It's often oversimplified as 'Jupiter = luck, Saturn = hardship,' but neither is purely good or purely bad — they just differ in direction, expansion versus structure.
The outermost are the generational planets: Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Since they move so slowly, they carry energy shared by people born around the same era. Uranus means change and individuality, Neptune means dreams and spirituality, and Pluto means deep transformation. So these three are read less as individual personality and more as the big flow of the generation you belong to.
To sum up, the same "Mars" acts completely differently depending on its costume — wearing Aries, it pushes forward like fire; wearing Pisces, it seeps in quietly. So looking at which sign each of your ten planets sits in draws, at a glance, the color each actor in your mind performs in.
