The Four Angles — ASC, DSC, MC, IC

Did you know houses have pillars? Your chart has four points that divide it into quarters, like a cross (十), called the four angles (角, angles). The Ascendant (ASC) you met in the Big Three chapter is one of them. These four points are the chart's skeleton.

ASC (Ascendant) is the eastern horizon at the moment you were born, so it's self, body, first impression, and life's starting point. Its exact opposite, DSC (Descendant), is the western horizon — relationships, partnership, marriage, meaning the partner you're drawn to and one-on-one relationships. It's as if 'you' has 'the other person' sitting directly across.

The up-down axis is paired too. MC (Midheaven) is the top of the sky, so it means social direction, career, honor, and goals; its opposite, IC (Imum Coeli), means roots, home, family, and your inner foundation. That's why people look especially at the MC and 10th house for career, and the DSC and 7th house for love and marriage.

One practical tip — A planet sitting right next to one of these four angles (in conjunction) gets a big boost in presence. A planet like this is called an 'angular planet' — think of it as the loudest-voiced actor in the chart. So which planet sits near an angle matters especially for that person's stage of life.
