The Four Directions — Never Read One Palace Alone

This is often the last principle to click when learning Zi Wei Dou Shu, yet it changes the reading most: a palace is never read in isolation.

When reading one palace, include the opposite palace across from it and the two trine positions connected in a triangle. This four-position method, including the subject palace, is called the trine-and-opposition structure (三方四正).

For the Life Palace, those three are the Travel Palace (opposite), Wealth Palace, and Career Palace. Reading only the Life Palace and declaring “this is the person” sees only half the picture. Stars in Wealth and Career blend directly into the person’s pattern.

This becomes especially important with an empty palace. Palaces without a major star are common, but empty does not mean featureless. Stars in the supporting positions fill the role. Traditional readers called borrowing the opposite stars borrowing stars (借星).

The reading order is simple: begin with the stars in the subject palace → compare the opposite palace to balance inside and outside → widen the view through the two trine positions. Only after all four are considered is the palace’s story complete.
