Empty Palaces — Empty Does Not Mean Absent

A first look at a chart can be startling because you may see a palace with no major star. If that happens to be your Spouse or Wealth Palace, it is easy to worry that this part of life is somehow missing.

But this is an arithmetic result. There are twelve palaces and fourteen major stars, with at most two in any one palace. Some palaces therefore share two stars, leaving the same number of others empty. The arithmetic always resolves this way.

Traditional readers called an empty palace Kong Gong (空宮). They did not skip it; they developed a method that borrows stars from the opposite palace. Because the stars are borrowed, the method is called borrowing stars (借星).

Why the opposite palace? Chapter 17’s trine-and-opposition structure provides the answer. Every palace is already read with its opposite and two trine positions. When the subject palace is empty, the other three fill its role, with the directly opposing palace providing the closest support. An empty palace is not a special exception; it follows the same reading method.

If an empty palace must be put into words, it is closer to “not predetermined”. With no fixed color, it responds more to circumstance and people. An empty Life Palace can make a person harder to define in one sentence and more responsive to context. Empty does not mean absent; it is a place that can receive because it is open.

By contrast, a palace holding two stars carries concentrated weight. It is powerful, though the two natures may also pull against each other. Compatible pairs such as Zi Wei and Tian Fu gather strength; unlike pairs create internal tension. Either way, that palace has a fuller story.
