Flying Transformations — What One Palace Sends to Another

Look closely at a chart and each palace has a Heavenly Stem written beside its Earthly Branch: Wu-Yin, Ji-Mao, Geng-Chen, and so on. These stems have a separate function that is easy to overlook at first.

Chapter 15 showed how the Heavenly Stem of the birth year places Lu, Quan, Ke, and Ji on four stars. Every Heavenly Stem can do this, which means the stem attached to each of the twelve palaces sends its own Four Transformations. This is called Palace-Stem Four Transformations (宮干四化), or Flying Stars (飛星) because the transformations are said to fly.

Here the texture of Zi Wei Dou Shu changes again. Until now, the question was which stars occupy which palaces—a static picture. Palace-stem transformations ask which position points toward which other position. The chart becomes a set of arrows, not merely a picture.

The basic rule is simple: if a transformation sent by Palace A’s stem lands on a star in Palace B, A is linked with B. If the Spouse Palace points toward Wealth, relationships and money are intertwined. Rather than one causing the other, it means they move together.

A closely watched case is self-transformation (自化). Here, a transformation sent by a palace’s own stem lands on a star in the same palace. Because the force circles in place rather than moving outward, traditional readers saw it as self-consuming: energy is spent inside and may be less visible outside.

From here, interpretation differs substantially by school. Some traditions even make Flying Stars their central method, so rigid conclusions are difficult to justify. At this stage, it is enough to remember that the stems written in the chart are not decoration and that one palace can be read as connected to another.
