D9 Navamsa — A Planet's Real Stamina

Is a planet strong in your birth chart still solid in the D9?

This is where Vedic astrology diverges most sharply from Western astrology. Vedic astrology doesn't just look at one birth chart — it builds separate charts that zoom in on a specific area of life. These are called divisional charts (Varga).

Divisional charts zoom in on the birth chart (D1) to look at each area separately — of these, D9 is the most important.

If D1 (Rashi) is the basic structure of your whole life, D9 (Navamsa) looks at a planet's deep strength, marriage, and maturity. D10 (Dashamsha) is career, D7 is children, D12 is parents… and so on. It's enough at first to know just D1 and D9.

Why is D9 so special? Because it's a second test of a planet's 'real stamina'. When we check whether a planet that looked strong in the birth chart keeps its strength in D9 too, that reveals whether it's polished only on the surface or solid all the way through. Conversely, if a planet looks weak in D1 but comes alive in D9, we read that as a strength that ripens with age.

One thing especially worth watching for is Vargottama. This is when a planet lands in the same Rashi in both D1 and D9, and it's read as especially solid, since its inside and outside match. Also remember that the pada you learned in an earlier chapter is exactly what determines this D9 placement.

Let's look at an example
Enter your birth date, and we'll work out which Rashi each of your planets moves to in D9 (Navamsa), along with whether it's Vargottama.
