Nakshatras in Depth — Pada, Gana, Nadi

Earlier you learned about Moon nakshatra. Let's go one layer deeper now. Beyond its name and symbol, a Nakshatra also carries several strands of quality, and — most importantly — it isn't only about the Moon.

First is Pada. It's a small slot made by dividing one Nakshatra (13°20′) into four, but it's not just a finer personality subdivision. Each pada links directly to one slot of the Navamsa (D9) chart. So knowing the pada tells you exactly where that planet lands in the D9 you'll learn about later.

The Nakshatra also carries three-way qualities, which are used in compatibility readings too. Gana is the grain of temperament — Deva (gentle, natural), Manushya (balanced, humane), Rakshasa (intense, wild). Nadi is the body's energy flow, split into Adi (wind), Madhya (fire), and Antya (water). Yoni reads instinctive compatibility through an animal symbol assigned to each Nakshatra.

And here's the most important extension — a Nakshatra isn't something only the Moon has. Every planet — the Sun, Mercury, Venus, and the rest sits in a Nakshatra of its own. In fine-grained interpretation, we also look at which Nakshatra a given planet is in, and who rules that Nakshatra. Just as your Moon Nakshatra sets the starting point of your Dasha, each planet's Nakshatra tells you the particular color in which that planet operates.
