The 12 Bhavas — Twelve Rooms of Life

If the Rashi tells you 'what kind of energy this is', the Bhava tells you 'which stage of life that energy plays out on'. It divides the sky into twelve slices and treats them as the twelve domains of life — the same spot as houses in Western astrology. That's why a Bhava is often just called a House.

Each of the twelve houses carries a different theme. The house of self and body, the house of wealth and family, the house of home and heart, the house of love and creativity, the house of career and honor… like that — Almost every scene you run into in life is held in one house or another. Just picture one circle ringed by twelve slots, like the diagram below.

Of all the houses, the starting point is House 1. This House 1 is called the Lagna, the Ascendant — the Rashi that was just rising on the eastern horizon the moment you were born. It's the single most important placement, standing for the self you show the world, your body and first impression, so counting continues clockwise from here — House 2, House 3, and on.

Vedic astrology's way of dividing houses is refreshingly simple, though. It mostly uses a method called Whole Sign — it takes the whole Rashi the Lagna sits in as House 1, treats the very next Rashi as House 2, the one after that as House 3. In short, one Rashi is exactly one house, cleanly, with nothing left over.

The Placidus method popular in the West has houses of uneven size, so two Rashis can sometimes span a single house — but Vedic Whole Sign has Rashis and houses matching up cleanly, one to one, so even beginners never get confused. That's a big advantage of Vedic houses.

Let's take a quick tour of what stage each of the twelve houses represents. Here are the first six.

House 1 self, body, impression · House 2 wealth, family, speech · House 3 siblings, courage, communication · House 4 home, mother, heart · House 5 creativity, children, romance · House 6 daily life, health, competition. The earlier houses lean toward life close to yourself — lots of stories about the body, family, and daily life.

The latter six houses move out into a somewhat wider world.

House 7 marriage, partnership, contracts · House 8 transformation, inheritance, secrets · House 9 teachers, fortune, faith · House 10 career, honor, public achievement · House 11 income, friends, networks · House 12 liberation, practice, foreign lands. The later houses hold life spent mingling with others and expanding out into the world. House 10 (career, honor) in particular is always the placement to watch when reading public achievement.

So how does a house get switched on? When planets move in, that house's stage lights up clearly. If several planets gather in House 10, for example, work and honor become a big theme in life. But there's something important to remember — Even a house with no planets in it is always at work. Every house has a ruling planet (Bhava Lord) that rules it, so depending on where that ruler sits and what condition it's in, even an empty house can show up powerfully. (You'll learn about this Bhava Lord in the very next chapter.)

The twelve houses are, in the end, only a map for understanding yourself. They're not a fixed fate where 'this spot is good, that one is bad' — just a reference chart showing which stage lets your energy shine best. Enjoy it with a light, kind heart.
