The Favorable Element in Depth — Supporting, Unfavorable, Draining, Neutral

Assigning a role to each of the five elements, split by balance, climate, mediation, and remedy.

Earlier you learned the useful god as "the energy I need." In actual BaZi practice, each of the five elements is assigned a Role centered on the useful god. Knowing this makes "this energy is good, that energy is bad" look far more three-dimensional.

The five roles are these. favorable element is the core; supporting element is the energy that gives rise to and supports that useful god; unfavorable element is the biggest burden; obstructing element is the energy that grows that unhelpful god's burden; and idle element, which belongs to neither side, is neutral. So an element you're "missing" might actually be unfavorable element — meaning its absence could be a relief. This is where the earlier chapter's 'absence is only a hint' comes full circle.

yongsin (用神, useful god) · the core energy you need most right now
huisin (喜神, welcome god) · a welcome energy that gives rise to and supports the useful god
hansin (閑神, idle god) · a neutral energy that neither helps nor hurts much
gisin (忌神, unhelpful god) · the energy that's the biggest burden right now
gusin (仇神, rival god) · an energy that gives rise to the unhelpful god and grows the burden
Five roles get assigned to the five elements, centered on the useful god — useful, welcome, idle, unhelpful, and rival gods.

There's more than one way to find a useful god, either. Four main ones — Strength-support that levels strength, climatic balance that corrects temperature, mediating that bridges two clashing forces, and remedial that cures the chart's illness. The useful god can come out differently for the same person depending on which lens you use, so knowing which one to reach for first is the real skill.

Strength-support useful god
The most common method — presses down strong, fills in weak, and levels the scale
Climatic useful god
A method that corrects the temperature first when a chart runs too cold or too hot
Mediating useful god
A method that uses the energy bridging two forces locked in a tense standoff
Remedial useful god
A method that pinpoints the chart's 'illness (病)' and applies the exact 'medicine (藥)' for it

So the useful god is an area where even experts read differently. Even when Glowy gives you one answer, it's a confident suggestion that "this is the most plausible way to read it," not the single correct answer. So take the useful god too as reference rather than a flat verdict — one lens among several for understanding yourself, not a verdict.

Let's look at an example
