BaZi's most important, most difficult idea, understood through a single scale.
The most important, and hardest, concept in BaZi is yongsin (用神, useful god). Put simply, it's "the energy I need most right now".
Why is it needed? Balance matters in a BaZi chart, but most charts lean one way. The weight that levels out that tilted scale — that's the useful god. On the other hand, an energy that's already overflowing and becomes a burden if you add more of it is called gisin (忌神, unhelpful god).
There's more than one path to finding a useful god. Three main ones to know:
Knowing which method to reach for first is the real skill. For example, a chart born in deep winter, frozen solid, needs to grab the temperature (johu) before even weighing strength (strength-support). A chart overflowing with fire in summer, on the other hand, needs cool water first. So even for the same "Metal day master," the useful god changes completely depending on the season it was born in — the useful god isn't a formula, it's 'a prescription made just for that person.'
What's the benefit of knowing your useful god? Traditionally, keeping colors, directions, seasons, people, and careers that match your useful god's energy close by is thought to help. For example, if your useful god is Water (水), symbols like black or blue, north, or being near water are sometimes used as reference. That said, these colors and directions are strictly a supporting symbol — it's not something to state flatly, like "use this color and your luck opens up," and real choices should weigh actual circumstances too. It's good to treat amulets and luck rituals lightly too, as a reference tool for steadying your mind.
