Luck Pillars and Annual Pillars — Life's Timetable

Everything you've learned so far — wonguk (原局, birth chart), meaning the eight characters you were born with — is a map that never changes for life. It shows who you are, what raw material you were born with. But even while the map stays the same, time keeps flowing over it. This time, let's learn how to read that flowing time.

The biggest unit for reading the flow of time in BaZi is daewoon (大運, luck pillar). Daewoon is life's big season, changing once every ten years. Just as we pass through spring, summer, fall, and winter, life too has big ten-year seasons arriving one after another in order. Just as spring is good for planting seeds and winter calls for hunkering down to rest, what suits you changes from one luck pillar to the next.

What's fascinating is that this order of seasons is already fixed the moment you're born. Starting from the energy of your birth month, a new energy arrives one at a time, ten years forward (or backward). So "which luck pillar I enter at what age" is mapped out in advance. It's a bit like a theme park map that already has the ride order laid out.

So why look at the luck pillar at all? Because the energy of the season you're passing through right now either gives you a tailwind, matching well with your birth chart, or, the opposite, gives you a headwind, clashing with it. For example, if the Water season arrives for a chart that badly needs water, it becomes a stretch where everything you do goes smoothly. On the other hand, if an already-overflowing energy comes in strong again, it can be a stretch that feels a bit stifling and hard. That's why a BaZi reader reads "the big flow of fortune" through this luck pillar.

There's an even smaller unit than the luck pillar — seun (歲運, annual pillar). If the luck pillar is a ten-year Season, the annual pillar is that single year's weather. Just as some days are clear and some bring showers even within the same summer, the mood shifts a little year to year even within the same luck pillar. What people usually call "this year's fortune" is exactly this annual pillar. It's easiest to think of it as that year's weather (annual pillar) layered on top of the big backdrop of the season (luck pillar).
