The Ten Gods — Your Relationship to the Eight Characters

Once you draw out the eight characters of a BaZi chart, they can look like separate, disconnected energies. But in Chinese metaphysics, we fix exactly one character as 'you', and look at how the rest of the characters relate to that one. This 'you' is exactly the stem of the day you were born — Day Master.

The other seven characters relate to you by whether it gives rise to you, holds you back, or you hold it back (the Five Elements generating or controlling each other), and by whether its yin-yang matches yours or not. Combine those two and you get ten relationship names. This is called the Ten Gods (十神).

It sounds complicated, but it's actually the same way we understand people. When we look at someone, we get them through relationships — 'this person is family to me, my boss at work, a client who helps me earn, a friend I hang out with.' The Ten Gods just name the eight characters by their relationship to you the same way.

The ten are much easier grouped into five pairs (groups). Each pair has one steady, upright the Direct type (正) and one intense, unconventional the Indirect type (偏).

· Companion (Friend, Rob Wealth) = the same energy as you. It means standing independently, competing with others, going side by side as peers, and stubbornness.

· Output (Eating God, Hurting Officer) = the energy you give rise to energy. It means words, talent, and expression; a giving heart; and children.

· Wealth (Indirect Wealth, Direct Wealth) = the energy you hold back (and claim) energy. It means wealth, a sense for the real, and the results you hold in hand.

· Influence (Seven Killings, Direct Officer) = the energy that holds you back energy. It means honor, discipline, career, responsibility, and the self-control to govern yourself.

· Resource (Indirect Resource, Direct Resource) = the energy that gives rise to you energy. It means scholarship, protection, taking things in, and motherly care.

What's interesting here is that when the Ten Gods bunch up toward one side, that energy becomes the person's biggest trait. Lots of Output makes someone whose expression and talent pop; lots of Influence makes a responsible, model-student type; lots of Wealth makes someone practical who looks after the bottom line — that sort of thing. None of it is good or bad — it just shows 'which relationship's energy was I born with a lot of'.
