Planetary Dignity — Comfortable Seats, Uneasy Seats

The same Venus functions with ease or tension depending on where it sits.

So far you've learned what a planet stands for, like "Venus is love, Mars is drive." But which sign the same Venus is in changes how naturally it uses that function — comfortably, or in a tense way. This is called a planet's dignity.

Traditional astrology holds that every planet has comfortable seats and uneasy seats set for it. Broadly four kinds.
· domicile — its own home, so it comes out most naturally.
· exaltation — treated like an honored guest, so the function shines.
· detriment — unfamiliar ground, so it comes out tense or twisted.
· fall — hard to breathe here, so it can feel clumsy or pressed down.

domicile · home
Uses that function most comfortably and naturally, like being in its own home.
exaltation · honored guest
Treated like an honored guest, so the function comes out shining.
detriment · unfamiliar ground
Unfamiliar ground, so this function easily comes out tense or twisted.
fall · pressed down
A spot where it's hard to breathe, so the function can feel clumsy or pressed down.
Comfortable seats (domicile, exaltation) and tense seats (detriment, fall). It's not 'good or bad' — it's how naturally the function comes out.

For example, Venus is in domicile in Taurus and Libra, so it enjoys love and taste with ease. Venus in Scorpio, on the other hand, is in detriment, so it tends to use love in a deep, intense, but somewhat tense way. So beyond just "Venus in Scorpio = deep love," you also read "how comfortably is this Venus working".

One thing worth remembering — 'good planets and bad planets' isn't what this is. A detriment or fall doesn't mean it's bad; it means that function is used in a way that's different from others, that takes effort. In fact, that tension can even become a unique charm or depth. So take dignity as a reference signal for knowing 'in what color it works'.
