The Navagraha — Nine Planets

Meet the nine planets, the chart's real main characters.

The real protagonists of Vedic interpretation are the nine planets, the Navagraha. If the Rashi is the stage's 'personality,' these nine are the actors who actually perform on that stage. Seven classical planets plus two shadow points called Rahu and Ketu make nine.

The nine planets — the ones with a darker border are natural benefics (Jupiter, Venus).

Each planet has its role assigned (karaka). Surya (self, father), Chandra (mind, mother), Mangala (courage, siblings), Budha (intellect, speech), Guru (wisdom, teachers, wealth), Shukra (love, spouse), Shani (responsibility, time)… like that. Rahu amplifies unfamiliar desires, while Ketu instead makes you empty out and detach.

Each planet also has an innate tendency (natural benefic/malefic). Jupiter and Venus are seen as benefics, which help gently; Saturn, Mars, the Sun, Rahu, and Ketu are seen as malefics, which push and temper you. The Moon and Mercury are neutral — they take on the color of whichever planet sits nearby. (Being a malefic doesn't mean 'bad' — it's just the difference between helping gently and pushing you to grow.)

Each planet also has its own Rashi (ruling sign), along with a fixed exaltation Rashi where it grows especially strong and a debilitation Rashi where it feels tense. Jupiter, for example, is exalted in Cancer.

One important thing here — don't just memorize planets like "Jupiter means learning and luck". The very same Jupiter rules a different bhava depending on what your Lagna is, so what it actually does for you changes. That's why you need to keep learning through the Lagna Lord, Bhava Lords, and dignity before you can finally read 'my Jupiter.' (That's exactly what the next chapters cover.)

Let's look at an example
Enter your birth date, and we'll pin down which Rashi each of your nine planets is in, down to whether it's exalted, debilitated, or in its own Rashi.
Add your birth time, and we'll also show which house (bhava) each planet is in.
