Life's timetable, ruled in sequence by the nine planets.
If BaZi has the Luck Pillar, a big season that shifts every ten years, Vedic astrology has Dasha. Dasha divides your whole life into a 120-year cycle: the nine planets become a 'planetary timetable' that governs you once each, in order. The formal name for this timetable is the Vimshottari Dasha.
So where does this timetable start from? The Nakshatra the Moon was in at the moment of your birth decides that — that 'Moon's sign' you learned in an earlier chapter. Each Nakshatra has its own ruling planet, so the ruling planet of the Nakshatra the Moon sat in when you were born becomes your very first period. That means even though the Dasha sequence is the same for everyone, each person's 'starting page' differs, so the season you're passing through right now is different for everyone.
Each planet holds its period for a different length of time. The longest is Venus for 20 years, followed by Saturn for 19, Rahu for 18, Mercury for 17, Jupiter for 16, the Moon for 10, Mars and Ketu for 7 each, and the shortest is the Sun for 6. Add up all nine and you get exactly 120 years — one full cycle. That's why some planets' seasons linger long, while others pass by quickly.
One big season doesn't carry just a single energy all the way through. Within the Mahadasha, the big period, it flows further into nine Antardashas, small periods. In BaZi terms, if a Mahadasha is like a 10-year Luck Pillar, an Antardasha within it is similar to the flow that shifts year by year. Small waves layer on top of the big backdrop.
Each planet's season isn't good or bad — it has a different 'color.' Saturn's season is a period of patience, taking responsibility and building steadily, Venus's season is a period where love, art, and relationships ripen, Jupiter's season is a period where learning and generosity grow, Mars's season is a period where courage and drive surge. Each season carries a slightly different mood and fits different kinds of work.
The reason to look at Dasha is simple: life's themes shift depending on which planet's season you're currently passing through. Even though you're the same person, in Saturn's season you quietly endure and build a foundation, while in Venus's season your relationships and enjoyment notably increase. The map that is your natal chart stays the same, but as the season flowing over it changes, the grain of how you live changes too.
There's one thing to always remember. Dasha isn't a scorecard marking 'this period is good, that period is bad.' Just as winter isn't a bad season but one for resting and preparing, each planet's period is just a flow that means 'this kind of energy runs strong right now'. Knowing that flow ahead of time and preparing in step with it — that's how to enjoy Dasha in a healthy way, and it's for fun and reference, first and foremost.
