They use the same birth data, so why do they draw completely different pictures?
Zi Wei Dou Shu (紫微斗數) is another Eastern system that has developed alongside BaZi. It starts with the same material — your birth year, month, day, hour — but turns it into a very different picture.
BaZi sets up Eight characters in four pillars and reads the relationships between them — generation, control, combinations and clashes. Zi Wei Dou Shu draws a board of twelve palaces and places stars across it. The reading begins with which star lands in which palace.

So the two systems are not rivals. BaZi asks “what kind of energy were you born with?” and weighs the strength of that material. Zi Wei Dou Shu maps “what sits in each area of life?” Wealth goes to the Wealth Palace, relationships to the Spouse Palace. Its biggest difference is that the areas come first.
The name “Zi Wei” comes from the leading star among the fourteen major stars: the Zi Wei star. It is also the name of an asterism near the Big Dipper. Unlike Western astrology, which calculates observed positions in the sky, the stars of Zi Wei Dou Shu are symbols placed by rules. It does not measure the sky; it follows fixed positions derived from your birth time.
There are several schools. Glowy follows the Common School (通用派). Their star-placement rules differ slightly, so a chart made elsewhere may not match exactly. That does not make one right and the other wrong; the rules are simply different, and a reading is clearest when it stays consistent within one school.
The school most often compared with it is the Zhongzhou School (中州派). They differ mainly in four places: which Earthly Branch determines the Life Master, and the rules for miscellaneous stars, the Twelve Spirits and self-transformations. The positions of the twelve palaces and the fourteen major stars are the same, so the overall picture remains similar.
Enter your birth date and birth time to follow this whole track with your own chart. Zi Wei Dou Shu needs the time to place the palaces, so unlike BaZi, birth time is essential.
